Tianhe District is named from the Tianhe Sports Center which is inside its the region. Tianhe Sports Center was founded on July 4, 1984, whose original site was the Tianhe Airport. Tianhe Airport was built in 1930, because the airport was built in the Tianhe village land, hence got this name.

July 27, 1984, the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee issued a formal decision to build Tianhe District.The name of "Tianhe District" first appeared in the document. May 24, 1985, the State Council issued a document agreed to establish Tianhe District.Thus it was named.

Tianhe District was aproved by the State Council as the Guangzhou municiapal region in May 24, 1985.It is located to the east of the old city,and north of the Pearl River shore,south of the Tropic of Cancer.Its east is the Huangpu district,west are the Dongshan district,Yuexiu disstrict,south is the Haizhu district,and north is the Baiyun district.Its total area is 147.77 square kilometers, whose built area is about 68 km, and is the city center area under construction.As one of the eight old districts in GZ,Tianhe district has highly developed capital market,and is the “"regional financial center core".There are nearly 40 financial corporate headquarters or branches settled in the Zhujiang New Town.The commercial trading is highly developed with the Tianhe Town Plaza,Grandview Plaza,Onelink,Pacific Exchange, the Pacific Computer Town, Tianhe Road shopping district, all of which have the average daily flow capacity of one million or more, and known as the "South China first shopping district." The high level commercial and residential district and international apartments are clouded here. The landmark building in Guangzhou - CITIC Plaza, Tianhe Sports Center, the Olympic Sports Center are located within this district. Besides,the future Guangzhou landmark-twin towers are  also selected in the Zhujiang New Town. It is also rich in Technology, talent resources,such as the South China University of Technology, Jinan University and more than 20 other schools, including four "211 Project" universities; Guangdong Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Guangdong Provincial Academy of Social Sciences and  57 other research institutes.

Guangzhou Tianhe CBD is approved by the State Council, which is one of the three CBD in China (The other two CBD are the Beijing Chaoyang CBD,and Shanghai Lujiazui CBD).They all mainly serves in the Pearl River Delta, the Bohai Rim and the Yangtze River Delta economic circle.The Tianhe CBD mainly ranges Zhujiang New Town, as the core, cover the North Tianhe and extend to Yuancun with a total area of about 18 square kilometers, where concentrates of nearly 50 Fortune 500 companies, as well as 70% of financial institutions in GZ. The majority of corporate headquarters and high-end services of GZ are also gathered here.
