Yuexiu District, began its the name since June 24, 1950 (it mergered from the former Xishan, Dexuan and Xiaobei area, when its scope is mainly the north of the current Yuexiu).It got its name because there is the Guangzhou Yuexiu Mountain Attractions (Yuexiu Park) within this district.

On April 28, 2005, the State Council approved (of the letter [2005] No. 35) that: revocation of Dongshan District;and place the original Dongshan District administrative area, Baiyun District spa street, Tianhe District, Dengfeng streets, Yang Ji in the Tianhe,Zhongshanyi and two committees, Shadong street under the jurisdiction of Yuexiu District. Yuexiu District People's Government is located in the Yuehua Road. The newly formed Liwan Yuexiu District and part of the boundary line has been adjusted. Yuexiu District has jurisdiction over 18 streets (Hong Bridge Street, Beijing streets, Liurong Street, Liuhua streets, Guangta streets, Renmin Street, Dongshan streets,Nonglin Street, Dadong Street, Datang Street, Zhuguang Street, Baiyun Street, Jianshe streets, Lehua Street, Meihuacun streets, HuangHuaGang streets, Kuangquan streets, and Dengfeng street).
