Alma Shalabayeva and her six-year-old daughter were taken into custody by Italian police at the end of May after what she called an overnight raid into their house in Rome, and were held in an immigrant detention center before being put on a private jet with Kazakh diplomats.

Shalabayeva is the wife of Mukhtar Ablyazov, an outspoken critic of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, and fugitive since 2009. In a testimony published by the Financial Times, she said that police looked like gangster-like people who were not wearing uniforms and carried handguns.

The episode sparked national debate after Prime Minister Enrico Letta as well as the top ministers of his unprecedented left-right coalition government, including Alfano, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino and Justice Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri, denied knowing about the operation until after it.

Critics of radical Left, Ecology and Freedom party (SEL) and anti-establishment Five-Star Movement (M5S) highlighted on Monday that former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi helped foster trading ties between Italy and oil-rich Kazakhstan.
